Type of Viruses
Just yesterday me and some dudes at school were talking about kinds of viruses and hacking methods there are out there. Nothing real serious, but it’s funny the kind of names they get. Let me list of a few.
Phishing: Pronounced “fishing” this is when you get random emails asking you to reset your Facebook, Craigslist or whatever account, you may even get some to see a YouTube video or even one that dares to ask for sensitive info straight up. There are so many of these i cannot possibly name them all, but i don’t have to, chance are if you have a spam folder, you may see some example, some are even in chinese lol. I always love reading the ones from that prince in Nigeria who wants my help. And some have gotten even some that seem like they are from people you know, so as always, now that you may be victim of random crime, by those phishermen, cause basically they are fishing, for you!
Here is one i got. Thanks Hotmail!
I am Mr Dan Maha director auditing and accounting department” bank of Africa (boa) Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso .I discovered the sum of seven million, two hundred thousand dollars (usd7.2) belonging to a deceased customer of this bank the fund has been lying in a suspense account without anybody coming to put claim over the money since the account owner late, Mr Salla khat from Lebanese who was involved in the December 28th 2006 Benin car crash.
it is therefore, upon this discovery that i decided to take this ultimatum and make this business proposal to you as the fund will be release to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and i don’t want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill the banking rules here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after five years, the money will be transferred into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occasioned by the fact that the deceased customer was a foreigner and a Burkina be cannot stand as next of kin to a foreigner.
Therefore, I am soliciting for your assistance to come forward as the next of kin. I have agreed that 40% of this money will be for you as the beneficiary respect of the provision of your account and service rendered, 60% will be for me. Then immediately the money transferred to your account from this bank, I will proceed to your country for the sharing of the fund. Call me through my telephone number: +226 75376152.
Mr Dan Maha.”
Next on the list is….
Whaling: This is a hacking method to get the BIG Fish. Let’s say somehow you got the personal email of a big corporate executive and you send him fake emails to get info from him, or pretend to be an offical who needs info from him, or somehow you convince him you are a customer whom he owes money, whatever there are many different ways, but the point is you are going for the big tamalé (Hmm i want tamales) So you go after the big boss after money and sometimes these guys are soooo busy, they don’t care about little amounts of money. So if you are a boss, be careful about the emails you get too, even if they directed to you personally. Ohh wait, I better tell my boss this, but on the other hand….. (Bwahahahah Evil Smile :))
Spearfishing: This is when you don’t go after the big boss, but the medium boss, like the manager or foreman, these guys are easy to get too, not that I would know. Same tactics work on them too.
Ransomeware: Lol this one is genius. This virus actually steals file or documents or even pictures from your computer and won’t give them back unless you pay a ransom. When I heard of this I was like, ohh no they are holding my computer data hostage! Thanks goodness I made backups! but then again, most people don’t make backups, and this would be horrible. terrible in fact. I’ve seen programs that do this, sort of, but mostly they pass them off as trials. But the best way this is implemented is when it locks your hard drive or encrypts important or essential system data, and later when you are desperate to use your computer they send you an email demanding money to unlock it. This is sort of a combination of viruses and ransoming, a dangerous combination.
Scareware: Ohh this is the most popular one that I’m sure you have all seen! It’s when you are using your computer normally and then suddenly it says you have a virus or system error like a BSOD (Blue screen of death) In order for you to fix the problem, they ask you pay some money to fix and buy the program. But in reality you are paying to let a virus stay on your computer. And some people actually deal with this, some scareware, only scares you, some actually lock down your pc and they bring it in to me immediately and i fix it, but most, if they can still use their computer, continue using it like normal until their pc then gets really infected. Why? Well a computer virus is like a human virus, let it stay and it will bring down all your other defenses while it’s their, it may start off with the antivirus then the firewall, then let in more of it’s buddies. Which they are called…..
Trojans : Yes, these are programs that make themselves look like a legit program and just infect your pc. (I think i mentioned this once before) Sometimes the makers of these programs advertise the software on Google or some other advertising service and when you click or download, you are infected by autorun software.
SPIM Spam IM Messages: Yes this is not new, but it’s starting up again. Have you ever noticed when you check your yahoo or hotmail IM invites you sometimes see random people on there asking to be your “friends”? Well these are what we call spammers, they somehow get a bunch of email addresses and once you “connect” with them, they spam you with random chat messages or emails. This can be annoying, but the worst part is that they usually are for porn and other innapropaite sites. Ohh no! Ohh yes! It would be really funny/sad if you let someone use your pc and suddenly a SPIM pops up and ohhhh, he’s telling your mother!
Well, that’s about all for today, i know there are many more different types of viruses and hack to rip money off of you, although I’m not sure how they make money off the last one, but nevertheless, they are all annoying and disrespectful. Until Next time i will help you find ways how to avoid all this, because one step is knowing, the second is taking action.
