Word Processor (Abiword)
It’s often I talk about free software, and all the goodies that FOSS (Free Open Source Software) has to offer. But let’s see a situation where FOSS saves the day. See like many people, i just want that dang computer to work, I don’t care how, just work well and to it’s full potential. Now, with this philosophy you might think that I find old computers useless, but that’s not the case. I mostly find old outdated software useless. But that’s not hard to upgrade. Let’s take into account an old Windows XP machine with a slow processor and little RAM. And let’s assume the person only wants to do email and write documents. Cough, dad, cough, well you could always go with Microsoft Office and deal with it running super slow on the computer, it would work, but it would not work very well now would it? No it would run about as fast as a dead turtle on a sticky freeway with a ball and chain attached to it. (meaning the latest office might not even work on it.) So how do I get the latest word on there? Fear not LibreOffice to the rescue! Woah, hm the computer’s so old, even that failed to install. (wah wah wah) Does this mean it’s over? No here’s where I came in surprised one day.
Abiword is a Document Writer Application that can handle many .doc .odt .abi files and open them up in a light-weight program for editing. Wait a minute, isn’t that like Microsoft Word? If MS Word is able to read and write all industry standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages and use spell check in many languages, then yes. it is like MS Word. But doesn’t all those features slow it down? No not really, Abiword’s best quality is it’s speed, plus on top of that it’s usefulness. Sure it’s not a perfect program, but for what it can do it’s awesome. This program cannot be compared to MS Office, becuase that’s unfair, :) but let’s see a sample now.
Hmm not bad, and yes, it does the job. So if you are looking for a lightweight Word Document Processor Thingy, look no further. Comes in popular Windows, Linux and even old timie Mac flavor.
This is an old picture the newer version of Abiword is obviously a bit better. So remember, if you have an old computer and need office tools, you are not alone.
